Derek Imai is AAPCHO’s Policy Intern. He was born and raised in Sacramento, California and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health with a minor in Public Policy at UC Berkeley. His passion to fight for social justice through public health initiatives has been demonstrated through his internship with California State Senator Nancy Skinner, activism in UC Berkeley’s student government (ASUC), and his work as a Commissioner in the City of Berkeley Community Health Commission. In addition, he enjoys advocating broader Asian American issues, as he is actively involved in the Japanese American Citizens League. He is eager to learn through his internship with AAPCHO how to better advocate on behalf of the Asian American community specifically through health policy. He hopes to help make healthcare more accessible, equitable, and diversified through all of his career goals.
Outside of work, he loves cooking and enjoys pretty much everything cold (i.e. cold brew coffee, San Francisco’s weather, the color blue, and skiing).
