Building Awareness Locally and Nationally through Community Empowerment (BALANCE)

Target audience: AAPIs living with diabetes, AAPI communities at risk for diabetes, health care providers serving AAPIs, as well as institutions, media and leaders of AAPI communities.

The BALANCE Program provides technical assistance to increase awareness of diabetes in AAPI communities. BALANCE works with mainstream diabetes organizations, such as Centers for Disease Control, National Institutes of Health, American Diabetes Association and the American Association of Diabetes Educators to increase the visibility and representation of diabetes related issues of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders through their networks and membership. Products of the BALANCE Program include a policy position paper on diabetes, a diabetes cultural assessment from 13 AAPI communities through focus groups and key informant interviews, translated culturally appropriate press releases, a recommended list of multilingual diabetes educational materials, a media spokespersons’ kit, and Steps to Manage Your Diabetes educational material in Chinese, Korean, Samoan, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.

Goal

To promote advocacy, collaboration and leadership related to diabetes to improve the health status and access of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
