PATH Technical Assistance Toolkit 

The Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations is pleased to introduce the Resource Guide for Asset-based Community Health Planning, a technical assistance toolkit for the Promoting Access to Healthcare (PATH) program.


Background

Over the past decade, there has been an overall shift by public health and social service program planners to utilize “community assets,” such as community members, places, or things in the community that can be used to improve the quality of community life, when developing programs aimed at improving the health status of that community.

In the Midwest and Mountain states, where there are growing Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) populations, local providers and community-based organizations have begun to fill a void in health care services by developing programs for this diverse population. AAPCHO’s PATH program, in recognition of these organizations’ efforts, is responding to the lack of available health care and social service resources and tools for AAPIs, by developing the Resource Guide for Asset-based Community Health Planning.

This resource guide was developed to help AAPI community-based organizations navigate their way through asset-based community health planning—from conducting participatory community assessments and developing successful partnerships to conducting community-based participatory research that in the end strengthens data on that organization’s community and helps the organization better advocate on behalf of that community.

It is our hope that such resources will eventually lead to new health care and social service programs that are responsive and effective to the unique needs of AAPI populations not only in the Midwest and Mountain regions, but throughout the country.
